At my send off party yesterday, my mom surprised me with this video that highlights all of my many dreams.  I am fortunate to have grown up with two parents that always believed in me and who always pushed me to believe in myself just as much.  They taught me that with hard work anything is possible and that no dream or goal is out of my reach and because of that, my dreams are limitless. ✨ #sundayinspiration #dedication #motivation #hardwork #perserverance #service #legacy #missamerica #missamericadc #navalofficer #usnavy #doctoralcandidate #therapist #ultimatedreamer #manifestation

One month until the 100th @missamerica is crowned and a day well spent with Congress members on the 1st session of the 117th Congress. Thank you to Congressman Bobby Scott (@repbobbyscott )and his staff for making today possible. I was able to meet with Congressman Scott, Majority Whip Leader Congressman Clyburn (@whipclyburn ) , and my @akasorority1908 Sorority sisters, Congresswomen Lee (@repjacksonlee ) , Johnson (@repebj )and Williams (@repnikema ) and talked to them about the 100th Miss America taking place next month and my personal platform of anti human trafficking.  In my Miss DC interview, I spoke about the importance of connecting with our legislators from all states to advocate for antihuman trafficking and today was just the beginning. 🇺🇸

Wow wow wow! How is this even my life? Tonight I got to meet an ICON and one of the greatest tennis players to play the game, Venus Williams. I grew up in a household that constantly spoke of the greatness of Venus and Serena Williams and I always remember my parents telling me not only their story but the story of their father.  It was such an honor to be invited to preview King Richard tonight at the African America History Museum and to get to hear Venus reflect on her legacy.  She and Serena changed the game for little black girls, not just in tennis but around the world and it brought tears to my eyes to see how it all started with a dream, vision and manifestation. King Richard comes out this Friday, November 19th and I HIGHLY suggest it 👑♥️

I also got to meet one of my favorite journalists and anchors, Abby Phillips. Never know who you’ll meet in these DC Streets 🥰

By the way, walking the red carpet was so much fun!!!  Check out my IG @missamericadc for photo of me with Journalist Abby Phillips.

Article by IvyTimes (Alpha Kappa Alpha): Miss D.C Soror Andolyn Medina Is Headed to Miss America

If crowned the 100th Miss America, Medina would make history as the first Afro-Latina, due to her Puerto Rican and African American ancestry, and she would also be the first military member to be wear the crown. She is hopeful that becoming Miss America will show the next generation of girls that they can have it all. “I feel blessed to be in the position I am in and I thank God for all of the many blessings he’s given me,” says Medina. “I am humbled by all of the many memorable moments I have experienced thus far and look to the future for many more.”

Andolyn Medina, Miss District of Columbia honored with Wreath Laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Today, I had the honor of being invited to lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. This was the second time I have laid the wreath, but the first time I did it as a Naval Officer.  As we celebrate militaryfamilymonth and Veteran’s Day this Thursday, I am thankful for the chance to honor those who paid the most ultimate sacrifice and the families who still mourn and miss them dearly. #neverforgotten #tomboftheunknownsoldier #arlingtoncemetery #missamerica #missamericadc #navalofficer #sacrifice #service #honor

On March 14, 2021 my colleagues and I presented at Div. 39, a society for psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychology within the American Psychological Association . We are the most black women that our program has ever accepted within one cohort, which shaped a very unique academic and training experience for us all in the midst of the pandemic and racial reckoning of 2020.

Shortly thereafter, we were approached to publish our experiences and research for Aperturas Psicoanalíticas to be shared in English and Spanish and spread across the diaspora. I am so proud of our work in publishing this, because of the vulnerability it took from us as new clinicians, and for the strength we found in each other to continue to persevere. We wanted to make our work public so that it may be of use for other black students clinicians that were also faced with the same challenges and for training institutions to be more conscientious of the role and implications they play.  Fast forward to just this week, the APA finally acknowledged that they need to intentionally acknowledge and examine the responsibility the field of psychology has when addressing systemic racism.  A statement that took far too long to come out, but is progress towards a long journey ahead.

Thank you to our professor, Dr. Sheehi, for all of her wisdom, guidance, believing in us and always being a light for us in our journey.  When I first started out on my academic journey, I remember having so many thoughts or ideas of how sociopolitical topics directly correlated to psychology, but felt like it was all in my head bc it was never discussed in my psych classes. Dr. Sheehi was integral in validating my experiences and in helping me see my place in the world and future of psychology.  I’m grateful to her, always, for encouraging us to think and to question the systems around us.
